WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2017 season Saturday afternoon with a 17-1 non-league victory over Goucher.
The offense was dominant against the Gophers (0-4), scoring nine goals in the first half and racing out to a 16-0 lead before Goucher averted the shutout in the final minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Kiera Lane, making her first collegiate start, made two saves in earning the win. The only goal she gave up was on a free position shot.
Nine different women scored goals for the Hornets (1-2) with freshman Nikki Zerna leading the way by registering her first career hat trick.
Zerna also had three assists for a six-point day.
Junior Abby Zorrilla got SU on the board with a free position goal at 24:04 before freshman Alexandra Simonson scored the first of her two consecutive goals at 19:36.
Simonson's goal, off of a free position, proved to be the game-winner.
Junior Annie McCorry's tally 15 seconds into the second half pushed the advantage to 10 goals.
Following Jordyn Miller's natural hat trick, Anna Baxter, Zerna and Nakona Wolfe scored the victors final three goals to give the hosts a 16-0 lead with 2:29 remaining.
Goucher scored its lone goal with 26 seconds remaining.
SU outshot the Gophers 41-4, had a 39-20 advantage in groundballs and won 13 of 18 draw controls.
The women continue this homestand on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. non-league contest versus Frostburg State.
