Men's Lax Pounds Saxons

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team jumped all over visiting Alfred University Wednesday in a 19-11 non-league victory over the Saxons.

Shenandoah (3-2) scored eight of the game's first nine goals, taking a 7-1 lead over AU (2-2) after one period of play on its way to the victory in the first-ever meeting between the two schools in men's lacrosse.

Sophomore Ryan Schott, who finished the game with a co-game-high six goals, had three of his goals during this opening run.

Tilghman Sanders, who dished out six assists to go along with one goal, set up Schott on his second and third goals of the opening spurt.

Sophomore Orlando Levins capped that eight-goal run to start by scoring unassisted at the 9:30 mark of the second. Levins dodged down the pipe right in front of the SU bench and ripped his shot past Saxons goalie Drew Gardner.

Shenandoah took a 9-3 lead into the break thanks to a Schott-to-Stephen LaTona goal six seconds before the halftime buzzer.

Alfred made its run in the third, outscoring the Hornets 6-5, but never got closer than four goals.

SU scored six of the game's final eight goals to pull away and secure the win.

"Today was a great team win," head coach Tim Marshall said. "We executed extremely well on the offense side of the ball and at the faceoff 'X'. Our past few games have greatly prepared us for our conference play."

The Hornets outshot Alfred 44-29, won 20-of-33 faceoffs and had a 31-21 advantage in groundballs.

Andrew Shy did the majority of work at the 'X', finishing 20-of-31.

Ben Judy had 11 saves.

Offensively, Schott, LaTona and Sanders all had seven points with Schott and LaTona each posting six goals and one assist and Sanders one goal and six assists.

Shenandoah opens up ODAC play on Saturday at Randolph College.
