SALEM, Va. – Sixth-seeded Shenandoah University advanced to the 2017 ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament semi-finals with a 7-6 victory over Roanoke College Wednesday afternoon at Kerr Stadium.
Junior Abby Zorrilla scored the game-winner for Shenandoah (7-10) off of a Jacque Hemler assist with 1:36 to play.
Hemler drove from behind the cage and found Zorrilla in front as the Roanoke (6-11) defense slid to stop Hemler.
The Maroons won the ensuing draw and had one last shot, which Hornets goalkeeper Kiera Lane stopped with just under a minute to play.
Shenandoah then held the ball for the remainder of the contest with junior defense Jen Northam running out the final 30 seconds.
The trip to the tournament semi-finals will be the third for SU in five seasons of league play.
The Hornets advance to play No. 2 Randolph-Macon on Saturday at Washington and Lee University. The opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. and is the second semi-final of the day.
Zorrilla's goal, her second of the game, capped a run in which Shenandoah erased a two-goal deficit.
Leading 4-3 at the break, the Hornets saw Roanoke score the initial three goals of the second half to take a 6-4 lead with 24:45 remaining.
Annie McCorry set up Zorrilla at 16:31 to start the comeback before Hemler knotted it at 6-6 with an unassisted goal at 12:28.
"What a great win," SU head coach Lindsey Lutz said. "Our defense played outstanding today and Kiera (Lane) was terrific in goal.
"It feels great to be back in the semi-finals. This is where we feel like we belong."
Lane had 10 saves in the winning effort.
Hemler had three goals and one assist with Zorrilla adding two goals and two assists.
"I feel so good for Abby (Zorrilla)," Lutz said. "All of her hard work paid off (with the game-winning goal)."
Roanoke outshot Shenandoah 24-22 and won 11-of-15 draws, but SU had a 22-12 advantage in groundballs to even out the possession time.
