SALISBURY, Md. – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team opened up its 2017 season Friday with a 2-1 win over host Salisbury in the opening game of the Salisbury Tournament.
Sophomores Jessica Stuart and Emily Yergin tallied for Shenandoah (1-0) to give the Hornets their first win over Salisbury since the 1994 season.
Salisbury (0-1) had won seven straight over SU since the Shenandoah win on September 11, 1994.
Stuart and Yergin both tallied in the first half with Stuart finishing off a Rebecca Collimore feed in the 12th minute and Yergin scoring unassisted in the 40th.
The Sea Gulls scored their lone goal 2:26 into the second half.
Salisbury outshot SU 13-12 and had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks with Hornets goalkeeper Charlotte Evans making three saves.
"Emily Yergin had an outstanding performance," Shenandoah head coach Liz Pike said. "We fought hard as a team and showed a great deal to build upon. This was a good win."
SU is back in action Saturday versus McDaniel in a 3 p.m. neutral site contest.
