Hockey Shoots Down 'Hawks

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University field hockey team earned its fourth victory of the season Wednesday afternoon with a 2-1 non-league triumph over St. Mary's of Maryland.

The Hornets (4-3) snapped a three-match losing streak by rallying for the win over SMCM (3-5).

The Seahawks struck first Wednesday, getting a Sophie Michel unassisted goal in the just the fifth minute.

Trailing 1-0 at the break, SU came out strong in the second half.

Coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft's club took the only three shots of the stanza and received goals from Katelyn Curtis and Daphne Leighty to complete the comeback victory.

Curtis scored the tying goal, her second of the season, unassisted at 46:56.

With a tad more than five minutes remaining, Melissa DeiTos set up Leighty in front for what proved to be the game-winner.

Isabella Morande, who made four saves in the first half, was not tested in the second and SU secured its fifth win in seven lifetime meetings with St. Mary's.

"We came out a little flat," Smeltzer-Kraft said. "But we made some adjustments at halftime and turned up the pressure offensively. This resulted in the two goals."

Shenandoah is back in action on Sunday at Wesley College.
