DOVER, Del. – The Shenandoah University field hockey team earned its second win of the week with a 4-2 non-league victory at Wesley College Sunday afternoon.
The Wolverines (2-7) scored the opening goal of the game before SU (5-3) answered with three straight tallies to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Taylor Hayes scored the Hornets first goal as she converted a Morgan Payne penalty insertion at 12:49.
This answered a Wesley goal scored in the same manner four minutes prior to Hayes' goal.
Payne gave SU the lead for good at 24:56 after finishing off a Melissa DeiTos feed.
Maddie Lamarca made it 3-1 at 41:56 by knocking home a rebound of a Kayla Alderman shot.
WC cut its deficit to one, 3-2, in the 56th minute before Katelyn Curtis closed out the scoring by blasting a shot home with 5:20 to play.
Shenandoah owned a 19-15 advantage in shots with Wesley taking nine of the game's 16 penalty corners.
SU keeper Isabella Morande had five saves to earn her second win in three decisions.
"We had to grind it out through the first half and converted on our chances really well in the second half," head coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kratf said. "I am really proud of how the team handled playing in the heat and how hard they finished the game."
The Hornets are off until hosting Mary Washington on Saturday at noon.
