WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team earned its third straight victory Tuesday night with a 2-0 non-league victory over the University of Mary Washington.
Shenandoah (6-3) scored one goal in each half to earn just its second win over the Eagles (5-5) in the past nine meetings.
Junior Rebecca Collimore figured in both goals, scoring the game's opening goal in the 36th minute before assisting on Liz Keefer's tally in the 48th.
On the initial goal, sophomore Emily Yergin sent a cross that ended up at Collimore's feet, where she ripped her shot from just outside the 18-yard box just inside the left post and past diving UMW keeper Haley Randall.
Collimore's assist 2:20 into the second half gave SU some breathing room. The Jackson, New Jersey native took a shot from 15-yards out that clanged off the crossbar and right to Keefer, where the freshman placed her shot into the left panel on the far side of the goal.
Shenandoah continued to generate scoring chances, taking six shots, earning one corner and forcing UMW into taking a red card (second yellow) for taking down Yergin just outside the 18-yard box.
The Eagles played the final 36:15 of the game with 10 players.
The Hornets win continues a trend in which the last eight matchups between the two schools have been decided by no more than one goal. Shenandoah's initial victory in this run came in a 2-1 home triumph on August 30, 2013.
SU outshot the Eagles 10-7 while the two teams split six corners.
Hornets goalkeeper Charlotte Evans had five saves, including two on breakaway situations in the first half.
"Loved the hustle tonight out of a number of players," SU coach Liz Pike said. "What a way for Charlotte to get her first-ever shutout."
The women continue this homestand Saturday with a 3 p.m. ODAC game versus Lynchburg. This game is also the middle game of a field hockey-women's soccer-men's soccer tripleheader on the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium turf.
