Marlins Spear Women's Hoops

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Host Virginia Wesleyan used a big run bridging halftime to key a 70-56 ODAC women's basketball victory over Shenandoah Wednesday evening.

After Ashley Stone tied it for SU (7-9, 3-4 ODAC) at 24-24 on a free throw with 4:54 to play in the second, VWU scored the game's next 15 points to take a lead it would not relinquish over the Hornets.

The Marlins (6-10, 3-4) started the run with a 3-pointer and scored the final seven points of the first half to take a 33-26 lead into the break.

The second half brought more of the same, with another 3-pointer to start the third, and VWU eventually expanded the lead out to 15-points before Kirstyn Arcata had a layup in the paint with 4:53 remaining in the stanza.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, Virginia Wesleyan would hold at least a seven-point lead the remainder of the contest.

A 17-7 Shenandoah run brought the Hornets to within seven, 56-49, with 2:32 left, but the Marlins answered with a 14-8 closing run to provide the final margin of victory.

Stone led SU with a game-high 24 points while Arcata added 12. Arcata is now 28 points from the 1000-point mark for her career.

Virginia Wesleyan shot 47 percent (23-of-49) to 34 percent (19-of-56) for the Hornets and also had a 38-29 edge on the glass.

SU did score 14 of the game's 22 points off of turnovers and 13 of 15 second chance points.

Shenandoah continues this road trip on Saturday with a 4:30 ODAC contest at Emory and Henry.
