'Jackets Earn Split with Women's Hoops

ASHLAND, Va. – ODAC co-leader Randolph-Macon salvaged a split of the ODAC women's basketball season series with visiting Shenandoah by downing the Hornets 68-62 Tuesday night at Crenshaw Gymnasium.

Kelly Williams, the five-time and reigning ODAC Player of the Week, had 37 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Yellow Jackets (14-3, 7-2 ODAC) to the six-point victory.

R-MC pulled away from Shenandoah (7-11, 3-6) by outscoring SU by a combined 13 points in the second and third quarters.

Sophomore Sarah Donley, who finished with nine points, leveled the contest for the final time with a pair of free throws 3:02 into the second to tie the score at 18-18.

The 'Jackets then took control of the contest, scoring 10 of the next 14 points in a span of 2:52 to lead 28-22.

Donley's classmate, Ashley Stone, stopped this run with a pair of free throws at 3:43 only to see R-MC outscore SU 6-2 over the next 1:51 to extend its lead out to 34-26 with 1:52 remaining.

Kirstyn Arcata was 1-of-2 from the line with Stone canning a jumper in those final moments to cut the halftime deficit to five, 34-29.

Macon then ended any thoughts of an SU comeback by holding Shenandoah off the board for the initial 4:15 of the third.

The 'Jackets scored eight points of their own during this time to see their lead balloon to 13-points.

SU recovered to split the final 16 points of the stanza with their hosts.

Coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club scored 25 points over the final 10 minutes, but could not complete the comeback.

Stone paced the visitors with 18 points with Jordan Sondrol adding 17.

Charlotte Woods backed up Williams with 17 points for Macon.

R-MC also had a 52-34 edge on the glass that led to the 'Jackets outscoring the Hornets 56-32 in the paint.

Shenandoah completes this five-game road trip on Saturday with a 2 p.m. ODAC contest at Randolph College.
