HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Host Hampden-Sydney scored the final four points of the game Saturday afternoon in a 67-65 ODAC men's basketball victory over Shenandoah.
With Shenandoah (8-11, 3-7 ODAC) leading 65-63 following a Christopher Chaney tip-in with 53 seconds remaining, H-SC (5-14, 2-8) answered with two free throws and a jump shot in the waning moments to steal the victory.
Following Malik Crute's game-winning jumper with two seconds left, SU had a chance to earn the win but Chaney was unable to convert his 3-point attempt.
The Tigers got the ball back to set Crute for the shot by forcing a Hornets turnover with 28 seconds remaining.
The final bucket capped a game in which the two teams were tied 11 times and traded the lead on 10 occasions.
Shenandoah held its largest lead, eight points, 4:03 into the contest while H-SC had a six-point advantage 2:03 into the second half.
Chaney paced coach Adam Walsh' club with 17 points with Kwa McDonald adding 13. Both men did their damage off the bench.
SU shot 39 percent (24-of-61) to 42 percent (25-of-60) for its hosts and also had a 10-rebound (41-31) advantage on the glass.
Chaney led that effort with nine rebounds.
Shenandoah returns home on Wednesday to open the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center with a 5 p.m. ODAC contest versus Randolph-Macon.
