Hockey Stings 'Jackets in OT

ASHLAND, Va. - Shenandoah University took down Randolph-Macon in a 2-1 overtime ODAC field hockey victory Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets (6-8, 2-4 ODAC) took the lead just three minutes into the match off the first corner of the game. The Hornets (12-4, 5-2 ODAC) tied the game up with ten minutes remaining, pushing the game into overtime. Off a penalty corner, freshman Kelsey Jones won the game 94 in overtime after dribbling past the entire R-MC defense and a knocking a reverse shot past Macon goalkeeper Gatlin Synder. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

59:31 | Taylor Hayes scored off of a Kelsey Jones pass. The goal was scored on a set play from a penalty corner. Hayes received the corner from Morgan Payne, Hayes passed off to Jones who was on her right. Jones faked a shot and fed the ball back to Hayes who took the wide open shot to tie the game up 1-1.

71:44 | Kelsey Jones scored 1:44 into overtime off of a Morgan Payne penalty corner. Payne inserted the corner to Hayes at the right at the right side of the semi-circle, who passed to Jones. Jones then took it all the way in past three 'Jackets and knocked her reverse shot went past the goalie. Hayes was credited with the assist.

02:44 | On the first corner of the game, Kathleen Tanner's shot was blocked by the Hornet defense. Austyn Farris cleaned up the loose ball by tapping her shot past Isabella Morande.

They fought all game to come back and took care of business when it mattered most."

MATCH NOTES

  • SU outshot R-MC 30-11.

  • Shenandoah had 21 shots on goal, forcing R-MC to make 16 saves and three defensive stops.

  • Isabella Morande made four stops for the Hornets. Fallon Spittel recorded a defensive save.

  • Kelsey Jones scored her third game-winning goal of her freshman season.

  • The Hornets have won all three overtime contests in 2018.

  • After winning the past five meetings, SU is creeping in on taking control of the series record with the 'Jackets. Macon leads the all-time series 7-6. 

  • The field hockey program has reached at least 12 wins for the third time in Coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft's six years with the program.

  • Shenandoah remains in position to earn a first round bye in the upcoming ODAC Tournament. The Hornets conference finale is next Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan
