Women's Hoops Tames Lions

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team earned its third straight win of the season Saturday with a 53-47 non-conference win over Penn State-Altoona.

Jordan Sondrol's double-double led the way for the Hornets (3-0) avenge last season's non-league loss at PSU-A (1-1).


THE RUNDOWN

1st Quarter

Shenandoah came out on top 10-9 at the conclusion of the first quarter. SU started with a 4-0 jump on the Lions but the lead would change two times over the first 10 minutes.

2nd Quarter

The two teams would trade buckets throughout the second and the squad's entered halftime tied at 22-22.

3rd Quarter

The Hornets began the stanza on a 6-2 run the first three minutes out of the locker room and ended the period with a 41-36 advantage.

4th Quarter

Shenandoah started the quarter with another 6-2 run to start the period but the Lions answered back with a 12-4 run to cut the Hornets lead down to three. SU made three free throws in the last 12 seconds to outlast the PSU-A comeback effort.

QUOTE OF THE GAME

"For the second game in a row, we held our opponent under 50 points and kept the shooters below 35 percent for the third time this season," head coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said. "We held Finnley Christine to zero points when she was coming off at 16-point game. I am very proud of our defensive effort and the ability to grind out another win."  

STATS OF THE DAY

  • Jordan Sondrol led the game in points and rebounds tonight with a double-double. She scored 14 and grabbed 14 boards.

  • Ashley Stone put up double digits for the second game this year with 12.

  • The team dished out 12 assists collectively with five different women recording two each.

  • SU converted 17 Lions turnovers into 14 points.

  • The bench contributed 12 points. Ragan Johnson led with six.

  • There were six ties and lead changes in tonight's game.

  • SU and PSU-Altoona have only met three times in program history. Today's win breaks the tie to give the Hornets a 2-1 advantage for the matchup.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah travels to Marymount Tuesday evening to take on the Saints in a 6 p.m. non-league contest.
