Wasps Sting Men's Hoops

EMORY, Va. – Host Emory and Henry jumped out to a 23-point halftime lead Sunday afternoon to key a 97-69 ODAC men's basketball victory over Shenandoah in the league opener for both schools.

The Wasps (6-0, 1-0 ODAC) shot 52 percent from the field and had a 10-rebound advantage to earn the victory over Shenandoah (2-2, 0-1).

IN BRIEF

Emory and Henry broke open a close game with a 26-14 run midway through the first half. With SU trailing by just one, 10-9, following a Jalyn Jarrett-to-Avery White layup at the 14:44 mark, the Wasps went on that 26-14 spurt to take a 36-23 lead after Colin Molden's 3-pointer with 6:38 left.

Christopher Chaney snapped that run with a layup at 6:22, but the damage was done.

E&H scored 18 of the final 24 points of the half to lead 54-31 at the break.

The Hornets had their best run midway through the second to cut the deficit to 19 with 7:10 to play. Emory and Henry answered the 16-3 SU run with an 18-6 run of its own to push the advantage back out to 31 with 2:31 remaining.

QUOTABLE

"Our team has to learn what it takes to compete with tournament-caliber teams night in-and-night out to earn more consistent results in games we aren't expected to win," head coach Adam Walsh said. "We will learn a lot from this game."

Shenandoah hosts former USA South Conference rival Christopher Newport on Wednesday in a 7:30 non-league contest.
