Captains Pull Away from Men

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 22 Christopher Newport University outscored Shenandoah University by 10 points in the middle of the first half on its way to a 91-78 non-league men's basketball victory over the Hornets Wednesday night at the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.

With Shenandoah (2-3) leading 22-21 following a Christopher Chaney layup at the 9:04 mark of the first, CNU (5-0) scored 11 of the game's next 12 points to seize control.

The Captains lead never dipped below four points the rest of the way.

IN BRIEF

Christopher Newport scored 20 of the initial 31 points of the second half to push its lead from eight points to 17 by the 12:49 mark.

Jaylen Williams, who had a game-high 23 points for the Hornets, ended that run with a free throw at 12:30. Shenandoah would score six of the game's next eight points, with Williams' tallying five of them, but could get no closer than 13 points.

CNU put the game away with a 22-9 run that put the visitors up 87-61 with 4:07 remaining.
