Women Top Maroons

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team celebrated its Senior Day with a 63-52 ODAC victory over Roanoke College Saturday afternoon at the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.

Playing before a program record 912 fans following the dedication of the Wilkins Center playing court to Dave and Kathy Dutton, Shenandoah (11-12, 7-7 ODAC) earned its second win in three games at the AEC with a dominating second quarter performance.

Leading 15-12 after one, the Hornets outscored Roanoke (7-16, 4-10) by 13 points in the second to take a 32-16 lead at the break.

SU held the Maroons to just four points in that stanza as RC shot just 2-of-15 (15 percent) from the floor.

Roanoke started out the third on a 14-2 run, at one point cutting its deficit to just four, before Sarah Donley and Jordan Sondrol responded with a 3-pointer and a layup, respectively, to push the advantage to back to nine points.

Those two women then combined to put the game out of reach midway through the fourth.

With Shenandoah holding a 44-39 lead with 6:33 remaining, Sondrol and Donley sandwiched a Maroons free throw with a pair of 3-pointers to stretch the lead out to 10, 50-40, with 5:04 left.

Another Donley '3', this one at 3:53, gave SU a 13-point lead and allowed coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club to coast home to the 11-point win.

Sondrol led the victors with 25 points with senior Kirstyn Arcata adding 15 and Donley 11.

Madeline Suhr had 17 points for the visitors.

Shenandoah shot 37 percent (19-of-51) for the game and had a 39-33 edge on the glass.

"We grinded out another conference win," Smeltzer-Kraft said. "A great first half put us in a position to be successful and I am so glad we could win to honor our lone senior, Kirstyn Arcata."

The SU women complete their regular season home slate on Wednesday night with a 7:00 ODAC contest versus Virginia Wesleyan.
