FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Host Mary Washington University scored the first four goals of the game Wednesday in an 18-6 non-league women's lacrosse victory over Shenandoah University.
The Eagles, 2-0 and ranked No. 17 in the nation, scored those four goals in the first 7:20 of the contest to take a lead they would not relinquish over Shenandoah (1-1).
Sophomore Jordyn Miller broke that opening string by scoring off of a free position for the Hornets at 15:45.
UMW answered by scoring the final six goals of the first half.
The Hornets opened the second half with Cassie Arndt and Nikki Zerna goals, the latter off an Abby Zorrilla assist, before Mary Washington strung together four straight tallies to extend its lead to 14-4.
The two teams then split the remaining six goals of the contest with Miller scoring once and Alyson Bittinger twice for SU.
Maddie Albornoz had four saves for the Hornets.
Mary Washington outshot Shenandoah 33-18, had a 13-12 edge in draw controls and scooped up 20 of the game's 32 groundballs.
UMW was also 16-for-17 on clears to 10-of-18 for the Hornets.
Shenandoah is back in action on Tuesday with a non-league home game versus Christopher Newport.
