WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Washington and Lee continued its strong men's basketball season with an 83-78 ODAC victory over Shenandoah University Wednesday evening at the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.
W&L (14-8, 9-4 ODAC) led for nearly 37 minutes in earning the win over SU (8-14, 3-10).
Shenandoah, on the strength of three straight buckets early in the contest, took an 8-4 lead by the 18:09 mark.
Unfortunately for the Wilkins Center faithful, the Generals answered with a 14-0 run to take an 18-8 lead by the first media timeout.
The Hornets were able to battle all the way back to tie it at 23-23 thanks to a 15-5 run from the 13:12 to 8:39 marks, but were unable to retake the lead.
W&L closed out the first half with an 18-11 run to lead 41-34 at the break.
Another SU run, this one 14-5 from the 2:43 mark of the first to the 14:00 mark of the second, brought the game back to level for the final time.
Christopher Chaney's layup tied it at 46-46 for the hosts.
The Generals answered again, scoring 16 straight points in a span of 3:53 to effectively seal the victory.
From this point on, the visitors led by at least seven points until Dominic Steward closed out the game's scoring with a 3-pointer at the one second mark.
Chaney led five Shenandoah players in double figures with 18 points with Jonah Meredith adding 16, Steward 13, Derrick Perry 11 and Jalyn Jarrett 10.
Chaney, with 10 rebounds, had his second consecutive and sixth overall double-double of the season.
The Hornets continue this homestand on Saturday with a 2 p.m. ODAC contest versus Lynchburg.
