Baseball Splits at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – No. 15/16 Shenandoah University baseball opened its 2018 ODAC slate Saturday by splitting a doubleheader with Lynchburg College.

Shenandoah (7-3, 1-1 ODAC) was a 5-1 winner in the opener before Lynchburg (9-4, 2-2) came back to win 7-3 in the nightcap.

Senior Colin Morse (2-0) was dominating in game one with eight strikeouts and just two walks in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Classmate Michael Bugonowicz, the current ODAC Pitcher of the Week, came on for Morse with runners on second and third in the seventh and snuffed out the LC threat.

Bugonowicz did not allow a hit over the final 2 1/3 to pick up his first save of the season.

The SU offense put Morse on top to stay thanks to a four-run fifth. James Papeika drove in what proved to be the game-winning run on a fielder's choice groundout with Keegan Woolford driving a run on a sacrifice fly and both Robert Marcelle and Christian Rice delivering run-scoring singles.

Woolford also had an RBI single in the first.

Lynchburg scored two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the eighth of game two to salvage the split.

Rice and Woolford both had one hit and an RBI with Woolford's on a double down the right field line in the first.

Robert Klinchock (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and one walk in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four.

Shenandoah is back in action on Tuesday at York (Pa.).
