Women's Lax Stops Saints

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team earned its sixth win of the season Thursday night with a 12-9 non-league victory over Marymount University.

The Hornets (6-3) outscored Marymount 4-1 over the final 13:23 of the contest to earn the victory.

Shenandoah, which led by two, 8-6, with 23:35 left, saw the Saints (6-3) take a 9-8 lead with a three-goal run from the 17:09 to 13:23 marks.

That final goal, by Abby Wescott, would prove to be the visitors final tally of the contest.

SU finished the game on a 4-0 run with the initial three goals coming via free position.

Alyson Bittinger tied it at 9-9 with exactly 11 minutes to go before sophomore Cassie Arndt put the hosts on top to stay at the 5:57 mark.

Jordyn Miller, who like Bittinger had three goals in the game, capped this free position run with her final goal at 4:33.

Senior Annie McCorry, who led the victors with four goals and was absolutely dominant in the midfield with 10 groundballs and four draw controls, closed the book on the day's scoring by converting a Nikki Zerna feed with 1:51 to play.

McCorry and Miller each had three caused turnovers.

Senior goalkeeper Maddie Albornoz had three of her nine saves after Shenandoah knotted the game at 9-9.

The Hornets outshot Marymount 28-12 and had a 24-10 advantage in groundballs while the Saints won 15 of the 23 draw controls.

"I am glad to get a win against an aggressive and attacking team," head coach Lindsey Lutz said. "I am very proud of our team for playing for the full 60 minutes. We will use this momentum to finish out our non-conference slate on the road tomorrow (versus Widener).

That road game at Widener starts at 4 p.m.
