No. 8/7 Roanoke Tops Baseball

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 8/7 Roanoke College used a seven-run fifth to key an 8-5 ODAC baseball victory over No. 16 Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field.

Shenandoah (10-5, 2-2 ODAC) took a 3-0 lead thanks to three runs on four hits and a hit batsman in the third, but gave it all back in the fifth.

SU starter Colin Morse (2-2), who had been cruising through the first four innings, issued two walks before hitting a batter to load the bases.

Following a foul-out to first, Roanoke (15-3, 6-0) strung together two singles, a walk and a double down the left field line to chase Morse.

The Maroons continued the rally versus relief Seth Comer, getting two more walks and a two-run single to plate seven runs in the frame.

Shenandoah answered with two runs in the seventh as Robert Marcelle, Keegan Woolford and Nick Goode went single, single, double to start the inning, but could not come all the way back.

RC closed the book on the evening's scoring with a run on two hits in the ninth.

SU had 12 of the game's 20 hits with Marcelle, Goode, Woolford, Luke Nussman and Henry Delavergne all getting two each.

Morse took the loss after allowing seven runs on four hits and three walks against five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Fletcher Mazzola (2-0) the second of five pitchers for Roanoke, got the win with 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Sal Trancucci worked a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

The two teams complete their weekend series Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest.
