Baseball Rallies Past Eastern Mennonite

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 24 Shenandoah University earned its third ODAC victory of the baseball season Tuesday evening with a 7-6 home win over Eastern Mennonite.

In a game delayed three hours by rain, Shenandoah (11-6, 3-3 ODAC) rallied from a 5-1 deficit with four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh over EMU (11-12, 2-6).

Junior Keegan Woolford was the story offensively as he finished the night 3-for-3 with a two-run home run (his third of the year), two doubles and also scored the game-winning run.

His second double, in the seventh, tied the contest at 6-6. Classmate Luke Nussman then drove Woolford in with a single up the middle.

The late game rally made a winner of senior reliever Jonathan Dance. Dance (1-0), the fourth of five pitchers for the Hornets on the night, gave up one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Tyler Ritenour got the final four outs to earn his first save of the spring.

Shenandoah starter Michael Bugonowicz threw the first five innings and had 11 strikeouts, including four in the first inning, in his stint.

Bugonowicz had the unusual first as he struck out the lead-off hitter on a ball in the dirt and the home plate umpire inadvertently kicked the ball away from Hornets catcher Matt Moon before Moon could make a play on the ball.

Robert Marcelle and Jamie Naill each had two hits for the victors with Marcelle getting a double in the sixth before scoring on Woolford's two-run blast to right.

Shenandoah is back in action on Thursday in a 1 p.m. non-league game at Marymount.
