Women's Lax Claws 'Cats

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team had a dominating first half on its way to a 21-6 ODAC victory at Randolph College Friday afternoon.

After the WildCats (1-7, 0-2 ODAC) scored the game's first goal at 28:22, Shenandoah (8-4, 2-1) answered with a 13-goal run and never looked back.

Anna Baxter tied it for the Hornets just 11 seconds after that opening goal before putting SU on top to stay thanks to a free position goal at 27:44.

Senior Abby Zorrilla sandwiched two more Baxter tallies with goals of her own at 26:14 and 21:55, and SU was on its way to the 16-goal victory.

Including Baxter and Zorrilla, seven different women found the back of the net during this run.

Shenandoah rebounded from a second Randolph goal with Jess Spindler and Annie McCorry tallies to take a 15-2 lead at the break.

The WildCats found some momentum by scoring four of the initial six goals of the second, cutting the Hornets lead down to 11, but would get no closer.

Freshman Macy Tignor made a great move inside the 8-meter off of a Nikki Zerna feed with 6:50 to play to stop the Randolph run.

This goal started a 4-0 run for Shenandoah to close out the game.

Zorrilla, Tignor, Megan Eagan, Cassie Arndt, Jordyn Miller and Alexandra Simonson had two goals each for the victors.

Baxter had a career-high five goals.

The Hornets outshot the hosts 38-17, were 6-of-8 on free position shots, and dominated in the circle winning 23-of-28 draw controls.

Maddie Albornoz recorded five saves in the first half before turning it over to freshman Gionna Maria for the final 30 minutes.

"It is awesome to get a road ODAC win," Lindsey Lutz, who earned win No. 9 as the SU head coach, said. "We are continuing to grow and mesh as a team."

The women are back in action next Saturday, April 7, in an 11 a.m. ODAC home contest versus Virginia Wesleyan. This doubleheader with the men will also be the program's "OneLove" fundraiser game.
