Women's Lax Spears Marlins

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team used a strong performance on the free position arc to key a 15-5 ODAC victory over Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (9-4, 3-1 ODAC) scored five free position goals in the first half to race out to an 11-1 lead over the Marlins (7-3, 1-2).

Coach Lindsey Lutz' club finished the day 7-for-9 on free position attempts, including 2-for-2 in the second half.

The squad's first three goals came on free position shots with Cassie Arndt scoring twice and Alyson Bittinger once.

Bittinger, who had a game-high five goals, scored three of her goals on free position attempts.

The Hornets scored the initial six goals of the game, and after VWU scored a free position goal of its own at 17:06, tallied the final five goals of the first half to take the 11-1 lead at the break.

Shenandoah maintained a 10-goal lead for all but 16 seconds of the second half.

Bittinger and Arndt each had five points – Bittinger on five goals and Arndt on four goals and one assist. Senior Abby Zorrilla added three goals with classmate Annie McCorry chipping in two goals and one assist.

SU outshot the Marlins 37-18, had a 32-13 edge in groundballs and won 14 of the 22 draws.

Hornets goalkeeper Maddie Albornoz made six saves.

"Every game is the league is important and it is great to get another ODAC win," Lutz said. "We worked hard today and it was also nice to get a win on a day that we honored Yardley Love's memory."

The Shenandoah women host Randolph-Macon next Saturday in 4 p.m. ODAC contest.
