Hockey Downs Seahawks

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.  - Shenandoah defeated St. Mary's College of Maryland 3-2 in a non-league field hockey match Wednesday afternoon.

The Hornets (6-1) scored two quick goals in the first three minutes of the game to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Seahawks (1-4) responded to the fast start with a goal in the seventh minute before Kayla Alderman scored what proved to be the game-winning goal midway through the first half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SU

01:06 | Taylor Hayes scored an unassisted goal at the top of the circle on the first penalty corner of the game.

02:47 | Morgan Payne inserted a corner to Hayes once again. Hayes took a hard shot that was a little outside but Payne was waiting at the far post and redirected the ball into the goal.

21:21 | Kelsey Jones found Kayla Alderman at the top of the circle where Alderman one-timed it past the Seahawk defense.

SMCM

06:09 | Mollie Belson serviced the ball to Meghan Ronan on a penalty corner.

63:37 | Alyssa Demski scored an unassisted goal to bring the Seahawks within one.

QUOTES FROM COACH

"It's always tough playing after a long bus ride," said Head Coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft. "The women started off quick and were resilient through a lot of uncontrollable circumstances. I am happy to have this win as a strong start to a week with three games."
