W&L Tops Hockey in Second Half Surge

LEXINGTON, Va. - Field Hockey opened up ODAC play on Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 loss at Washington and Lee University.

W&L (3-5, 1-0) used a three goal second half to push past the Hornets (7-3, 0-1). The game was tied 2-2 at the end of the first.

08:35 | ODAC Player of the Week, Taylor Hayes, took advantage of a W&L penalty in the semi-circle. Off the penalty stroke, she scored her 8th goal of the season.

34:24 | Morgan Payne serviced a penalty corner to the top of the circle where Hayes shot just inside of the left post for her second goal of the game.

15:24 | Olivia Hewitt inserted a corner to Kelly Fennessy at the top of the circle, Fennessy played the ball back to Hewitt who was on the left post to tie up the game at 1-1.

22:57 | Olivia Hewitt scored off of a penalty corner, the first shot was blocked by Shenandoah's defense and Hewitt connected with the loose ball to give Washington and Lee a 2-1 lead.

55:22 | WLU's Grace Weise scored on a breakaway goal to take back the lead 3-2.

61:41 | Isabella Morande saved Haley Tucker's first shot but Tucker was able to push the rebounded ball past the goal line on the left side.

64:54 | Abigail Hancock's shot from the top of the circle found the back of the goal.

"We did not execute our game plan today," said Head Coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft. "We will work hard this week to clean up some miscues and move on to Bridgewater. The ODAC is a strong league, we need to bounce back after this loss to keep ourselves relevant in league play."

Field Hockey is back at home on Wednesday, October 3rd. The Hornets will take on Bridgewater College at 7:00 pm.
