ARLINGTON, Va. – Host Marymount University scored the initial eight points of overtime Wednesday night on its way to an 88-81 non-conference men's basketball victory over Shenandoah University.
Shenandoah (5-11), which erased an 11-point second half deficit, had a chance to win in regulation before turning the ball over with 1.5 seconds remaining.
Marymount (8-9) was not able to get off a shot in that final 1.5 seconds, but made up for it in the extra session.
IN BRIEF
The Saints scored the first eight points of OT, holding SU scoreless until the 2:02, and coasted home to the seven-point win.
The Hornets helped out their hosts by having a tough night from the line.
Shenandoah missed 18 of 25 attempts (28 percent) at the charity stripe, including both ends of six two-shot free throw opportunities and the front end of one one-and-one.
SU made up for those struggles by taking 20 more attempts from the field than Marymount (77 versus 57) while shooting 46 percent.
Marymount, thanks to a 30-foot heave right before the halftime buzzer, took a 41-31 lead at the break.
After SU cut the lead to four by the 13:56 mark, the Saints answered with a 13-5 run over the next 3:48 to extend their lead out to 12 points.
Shenandoah closed regulation with a 19-8 run, finishing with a Christopher Chaney layup with 21 seconds remaining.
Following a time-out, SU forced a turnover on a five-second call to regain possession with 17.2 seconds left.
The Hornets called a timeout of their own with 15.2 seconds left, but were unable to get off a shot in regulation.
