Volleyball Splits at Emory & Henry

Hornets Defeat Lynchburg, Fall to E&H

EMORY, Va. – Shenandoah University split its ODAC volleyball tri-match at Emory & Henry College Sunday afternoon.

Shenandoah (8-16, 3-7 ODAC) came back from a 3-2 loss to host Emory & Henry in the opener to defeat Lynchburg, 3-1, in the second match of the day.

MATCH ONE RECAP

Shenandoah won the opening two sets, 25-23 and 25-20, only to see the Wasps (7-13, 4-5) storm back to take the victory.

E&H won set three and four at 19 and 23, respectively, before winning 15-11 in the fifth to steal the victory.

The win by the Wasps returns the favor as SU did the same thing last season in the Hornets home match, winning in five after dropping the opening two sets.

After hitting .187 (27-13--75) in the opening two sets, Shenandoah hit just .080 (27-19—99) in sets three thru five. E&H hit .198 (36-16—101) during that same span and had a match-best .214 hitting percentage in the decisive fifth set.

SU dropped the opening set, 25-22, before winning at 23, 19 and 19 over Lynchburg (13-8, 4-5).

The victory also gives Shenandoah a split in the two matches the two Hornets have played this season. Lynchburg was a 3-0 winner in a September 6 match played at Gallaudet University as part of the Gallaudet Invitational.

Shenandoah had a much stronger performance at the attack line versus Lynchburg than in the opening match as coach Kent Clayberg's club hit .166 (46-20--157) including .212 (13-6--33) in the clinching fourth set.

Three women: Kate Poppo, Sabrina Semo and Emily Cheatwood, had at least nine kills each with Poppo's 11 leading the way.
