WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team earned its first-ever ODAC victory over the University of Lynchburg with a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon.
Â
Shenandoah (11-6, 6-3 ODAC) won for the first-time in the last 12 meetings with Lynchburg dating back to the 2010 season.
IN DEPTH
In those previous 11 meetings, all but one of which have come in league play, SU had an 0-10-1 record against Lynchburg (9-6-1, 4-4).
Â
That lone tie, a 1-1 contest on October 23, 2015, also came at home.
Â
Shenandoah scored the initial two goals of the game with
Abby Alexa scoring at 14:06 and
Taylor Morris at 53:34 to provide enough offense to down its fellow set of ODAC Hornets.
Â
Lynchburg cut the deficit in half with an Alyssa Rudy goal 74 seconds after Morris' tally. In the 82
nd minute, the visitors had a chance to tie the game on a penalty kick but saw the attempt miss high.
Â
Sunday's win, which came on Senior Day with all-time leading scorer
Emily Yergin and team captain
Alison Spaziani honored prior to the contest, also clinched a spot in the upcoming ODAC Tournament.
Â
Shenandoah now has 18 points in league play with just one game, on Wednesday at Washington & Lee, remaining. SU is currently in a three-way tie for third place along with Roanoke and Bridgewater and holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over eighth-place Lynchburg.
Â
Eastern Mennonite, holding down the ninth and final spot in the tournament with 10 points, cannot catch Shenandoah in its remaining two league games.
Â
Tournament play begins on Monday, November 4 with the No. 9 at No. 8 game. The quarterfinal round, with the top four seeds hosting, is set for Wednesday, November 6.
QUOTABLE
"This was a great win and special day to celebrate Alison and Emily," head coach Liz Pike said. "They both have had amazing careers."
