Captains Sail Past Men's Hoops

Hornets Fall, 85-62

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – No. 9 Christopher Newport University used a dominant performance on the glass to key an 85-62 non-league men's basketball victory over Shenandoah University Tuesday afternoon at the Freeman Center.

The Captains (1-1), a Final Four team last season, outrebounded the Hornets 60-41 to help fuel the 23-point win.

IN BRIEF

That 19-rebound edge, which included a 38-14 bulge on the Shenandoah offensive end, also helped CNU score 46 points in the paint and nine second-chance points.

Shenandoah scored the initial five points of the game, all by sophomore Jaylen Williams, before Christopher Newport answered with an 11-3 run over the next 4:20 that gave the Captains the lead for good.

A Williams layup at 14:21 cut the deficit to just one, 11-10, but this would be as close as Shenandoah would come the rest of the way.

The Captains reeled off another run, this one 16-4 over 5:08, to push their advantage into double-digits for the first time. After Ethan Diffie canned a pair from the line to make 27-19 with 7:42 remaining in the first, CNU closed out the half by scoring 18 of the final 29 points in the stanza to take a 45-30 lead at the break.

Layups by Williams and Diffie as the final two buckets of the first allowed Shenandoah to make it the 15-point game at halftime.

In the second, SU was able to get within 11 points on two occasions, the last with 12:41 left, before Christopher Newport pulled away with a 13-4 spurt.

The margin remained at least 18-points over the final 10 minutes of the contest.
