WINCHESTER, Va. – The defending ODAC champion Shenandoah University women's basketball team opened up its 2019-20 league slate with a 57-44 home victory over Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday evening.

Shenandoah (2-2, 1-0 ODAC) led 15-11 after one and pulled away from the Marlins (1-3, 0-1) with a strong second quarter.

Leading by four points after the first, SU scored 14 of the initial 18 points of the second to extend its lead out to 29-15 with 2:27 to play in the stanza.

The margin remained 14 at the break, 33-19, as Shenandoah held VWU to 27 percent shooting (4-of-15) in the second.

Another run, this one 16-8 to start the third, pushed the SU lead out to 22 points with 49 seconds to play in the third.

Virginia Wesleyan outscored the Hornets 16-8 in the third, but never seriously threatened.
