FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Host Mary Washington used a big run midway through the first half to key an 81-53 non-league men's basketball victory Friday night over Shenandoah University in the season opener for both teams.

With Shenandoah (0-1) leading 15-12 following a
Christopher Chaney layup with 10:03 remaining in the first, UMW (1-0) answered with a 15-2 run over the next 5:41 to take a 27-17 lead.

Chaney cut the deficit to eight points by scoring the initial bucket of the second half before UMW answered with a game-clinching run.

The Eagles reeled off 14 of the game's next 16 points, with
Alan Dabney scoring the Hornets lone bucket, to extend their lead out to 20 points with 13:59 remaining.

Shenandoah would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way and Mary Washington would push the advantage out to 26 points on two occasions.
