Misericordia Sweeps Baseball

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Misericordia swept a pair of non-league baseball games from Shenandoah University Friday afternoon.

Misericordia (2-0) was a 7-5 winner in game one before completing the sweep over SU (0-2) with a 16-4 victory in the nightcap.

IN BRIEF

GAME ONE

Shenandoah jumped all over the Cougars for four runs on four hits, but were held to just four hits over the next six innings as Misericordia rallied for the victory.

Trailing 5-2 in its penultimate at-bat, the Cougars took advantage of a crucial Shenandoah error to score five unearned runs on four hits and steal the victory.

Robert Klinchock (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out three.

Luke Nussman and Jaime Naill had two hits each with Naill and Robert Marcelle both driving two runs.

Reliever Zach Mason (1-0) earned the victory with 2/3 of an inning of relief work. Kyle Melahn recorded the final six outs to get the save.

GAME TWO

Misericordia scored one run in the second and four in the fourth before blowing open the contest with a nine-run sixth. The Cougars had 16 hits in the contest.

Shenandoah scored its four runs on eight hits and had two runs in the fourth and two in the seventh.  Freshman Blaine Hansen was 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the offense.

Gerard DePhillips (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits and one walk in 3 1/3 innings.

Ian McCole got the win after throwing the first four innings and allowing two runs on five hits and one walk against four strikeouts.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah is back in action next weekend in a three-game home series versus Neumann.

  • Misericordia is ranked No. 5 in the ABCA poll and No. 11 in the D3baseball.com poll.
  • The Cougars advanced to Appleton, Wisconsin last season for the DIII World Series
  • This is the second time in three years that the two teams have faced each other in a season-opening series
  • Henry Delavergne, who started in center field and had a hit in his first at-bat, left the game in the middle of the second inning with an apparent leg injury
  • Nussman had one hit in the second game
