Baseball Tops Falcons

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University baseball team ran its winning streak to five games with a 7-2 non-league win over Messiah College Monday afternoon.

Shenandoah (5-2) scored four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to pull away from Messiah (4-2).

IN BRIEF

Leading 1-0 after Keegan Woolford drew a bases loaded walk in the first, SU found itself trailing by a run as Messiah took advantage of a Hornets to score a pair of unearned runs in the fifth off of Shenandoah starter Carson Kulina (1-0).

Kulina, making his first-ever varsity start, worked out of additional trouble by getting the third out of the fifth as the Falcons attempted to move up on a ball that got away from catcher Matt Moon. Moon cut down Jarod Bingaman at third.

In the sixth, the Hornets loaded the bases for Woolford on a walk, a single and a muffed throw on Jamie Naill's sacrifice bunt.

With the infield playing in, Woolford bounced a ball over the outstretched glove of MC first baseman Hunter Brindle that brought home Robert Marcelle and Luke Nussman with the tying and go-ahead runs.

Henry Delavergne had a single through the right side, again versus a drawn-in infield, to make it 5-2 in favor of the hosts.

Shenandoah scored two more in the eighth, on a Jacob Peters sacrifice fly and a Grant Thompson single, to close out the Falcons.

Kulina allowed the two unearned runs on six hits and two walks in 6.0 innings. He struck out six before Michael Robst took over for the seventh.

Robst recorded the save after allowing two hits and three walks in the final three innings. He also struck out two.

Woolford drove in three runs and Delavergne had two hits to lead the offense.
