Baseball Soars Past Eagles

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 27/RV Shenandoah University baseball team earned its sixth straight victory Wednesday with a 4-2 non-league win at Mary Washington.

Shenandoah (6-2) scored four runs on three hits in the fourth to provide enough offense to down the Eagles (4-4).

IN BRIEF

After the Hornets initial run scored thanks to a Jaime Naill sacrifice along with a UMW error, Henry Delavergne had an RBI single followed by a Wyatt Potter two-run double to make it 4-0.

Freshman Matt Barnes, the third of five pitchers for coach Kevin Anderson, got his first career win with 3.0 innings of relief work. He entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth and got out of the jam with a forceout at the plate followed by a double play.

Junior Gerard DePhillips posted his second save by recording the final three outs in the ninth. Mary Washington got its leadoff hitter on before DePhillips came in and got two flyouts and a groundout to close out the contest.

Potter finished his day 4-for-4 with two RBI.

UP NEXT

The Hornets begin a three-game conference string Saturday by hosting Virginia Wesleyan in a noon doubleheader.
