Baseball Splits with Marlins

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University baseball team split its ODAC doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (7-3, 3-1 ODAC) salvaged the split with a 6-4 win in game two after VWU (7-6, 3-1) was a 7-2 winner in the opener.

GAME ONE

Virginia Wesleyan broke open a tie game with four runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a 7-2 victory.

The Marlins had 15 hits in the win, including three each from left fielder Zach Clark and starting pitcher Jacob Pilarski (2-2).

Pilarski allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six in 8.0 innings of work.

Reeves Lowry (1-1) took the loss for SU after giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings. He also struck out four.

Keegan Woolford and Luke Nussman both had two hits for the hosts.

GAME TWO

Shenandoah salvaged the split by rallying for a 6-4 win in the nightcap.

After the Marlins scored one run in the third and another in the fourth, SU answered with a two-run sixth before taking the lead for good with one in the seventh.

Pearce Bucher and Henry Delavergne had RBIs in the seventh, on a single through the right side and a groundball that went for an error, respectively.

In the seventh, Tristan Baker led off with a double down the left field line and scored on Grant Thompson's two-out single through the right side.

The Hornets scored three runs in the eighth on two hits, a fielder's choice and a VWU error. Baker, Nussman and Keegan Woolford all drove in runs in the frame with Woolford capping the scoring on single through the left side to bring home Nussman.

Robert Klinchock (2-1) was the winner after throwing the initial seven innings of the contest. He allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Gerard DePhillips came on to get the final three outs and notch his third save of the season and the second of the week. He struck out the final two hitters with the tying run on base.
