Baseball Tops Diplomats

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University baseball team earned its 10th win of the season with a 9-7 non-league home victory over Franklin & Marshall Thursday afternoon.

Shenandoah (10-5) scored five runs in the first to take a lead it would not relinquish over the Diplomats (13-6).

IN BRIEF

SU scored five runs on four hits, the last a two-run Grant Thompson dinger, to jump all over the Dips.

F&M did not fold its tents, however, scoring two runs in the second, one in the third and four in the sixth to cut its deficit to 8-7.

The Hornets answered with one in the bottom of the sixth and then relied on relievers Calvin Pastel and Cade Templeton to close the door.

Pastel (1-0), who took over for starter Mike Verzaleno in the third, tossed 5 1/3 innings of relief to earn his first career victory. He struck out three, did not walk a batter and all four of the runs he allowed in the sixth were unearned.

Templeton got the final four outs to post his first save. He got the final two outs on a double play.

Jamie Naill had three hits and three RBI, including that insurance run in the sixth, with Luke Nussman, Keegan Woolford and Jacob Peters getting two hits each.

Thompson and Peters both had two RBI.

Kyle Roche (0-1) took the loss for F&M. He gave up eight runs on 10 hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings.
