Baseball Splits with Tigers

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University baseball team recorded a split Saturday in its ODAC doubleheader versus Hampden-Sydney.

Shenandoah (20-11, 10-9 ODAC) was a 17-14 winner in the nightcap after H-SC (16-15-2, 10-8-1) was a 20-6 victor in the opener.

GAME ONE

Hampden-Sydney banged out 22 hits and led throughout thanks to one run in the first and four more in the third, but did not truly break the game open until scoring nine runs in the ninth on its way to the 20-6 victory.

All nine H-SC starters got at least one hit with four players getting three each and four more with two.

Robert Marcelle paced the Hornets offense with a 3-for-4 contest while Frankie Ritter and Keegan Woolford both had two hits.

Chase Mayberry was the winner after giving up four runs on nine hits and one walk in 6.0 innings. Trey Celata got the save by getting the final nine outs of the contest.

Mayberry is now 4-3 on the year.

Robert Klinchock (4-4) took the loss for the Hornets. He gave up six runs on 12 hits and one walk against four strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

GAME TWO

Shenandoah blasted seven home runs in the nightcap, including two each from Woolford and senior Jamie Naill, but had to hold on as H-SC scored eight runs in the ninth before Gerard DePhillips got the final two outs of the contest.

Robert Marcelle, Luke Nussman and Tristan Baker also went deep in the winning effort.

SU scored eight runs in the first, and a combined eight runs in the fourth through sixth innings to take a 16-0 lead after six.

Hampden-Sydney clawed back with four runs in the seventh, two in the eighth and the eight-spot in the ninth.

Reeves Lowry (2-3) went the first 6.0 innings and gave up four runs on five hits and three walks to get the victory.

He also struck out three.

Bradford Webb took the loss for the Tigers after allowing eight runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Baker had four hits, Henry Delavergne three and Naill, Woolford, Nussman and Marcelle two each.

Naill drove in five runs with Baker, Woolford and Nussman posting three RBI each.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah continues ODAC play on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. home contest versus Washington and Lee.
