WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University baseball team officially punched its ticket to the 2019 ODAC Tournament with a 13-9 victory over Washington and Lee Tuesday afternoon.
Shenandoah (21-11, 11-9 ODAC) had a 12-4 lead heading to the eighth only to see the Generals (14-18, 8-12) made matters interesting.
IN BRIEF
W&L scored five runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batsmen in the eighth to cut its deficit to three runs before freshman Aaron Torres got the final four outs to post his first-ever save.
In the ninth, Torres gave up a leadoff single but then got a 5-3 lineout double play and a soft liner to short to end it.
Torres classmate, Carson Kulina, improved to 4-0 this spring by throwing the first 6.0 innings of the contest. He allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five.
Shenandoah banged out 12 hits in the game with Frankie Ritter, Tristan Baker, Grant Thompson, Matt Moon and Henry Delavergne all getting two each.
Baker drove in three runs and both Moon and Delavergne had a pair of RBI.
Baker's three-run double in the sixth plated what proved to be the game-winning run.
Mason Shuffler, the first of seven Generals hurlers, took the loss. He allowed three runs on three hits and two walks in 1.0 inning.
Four of the Hornets 13 runs, including all three in the third, were unearned.
