Baseball Splits with Lynchburg

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University baseball team had another ODAC split Saturday, taking game two from visiting Lynchburg after dropping the opener.

Shenandoah (14-8, 7-6 ODAC) was a 3-2 winner in the nightcap after Lynchburg (14-14, 7-6) took game one by a 6-4 count.

GAME ONE

Lynchburg combined a three-run third along with single runs in the first, fifth and seventh to top SU 6-4.

Shenandoah scored one run in the third and sixth along with two runs in the fifth, but never got closer than two runs to its visitors.

Tristan Baker was 3-for-5, Matt Moon had two hits and Keegan Woolford drove in a pair to lead the SU offense.

Brandon Pond (3-0) was the winner for Lynchburg. He gave up two runs on four hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings of relief work. 

Santiago Meneses registered the final six outs for the save.

Robert Klinchock (3-3) took the loss after giving up five runs on nine hits and one walk in 6.0 innings. He struck out four.

GAME TWO

Trailing by two runs after Lynchburg scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, Shenandoah scored one run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh to gain the split with a 3-2 victory.

Frankie Ritter had the game-winning RBI on a two-out single to left center to score Luke Nussman. Nussman led off the frame with a single to left center and stole second before scoring on the two-out hit.

Freshman Matt Barnes (2-0) was the winner with 2.0 innings of relief work. He walked one and struck out one.

Gerard DePhillips got his eighth save of the spring, and third of the week by getting the final four outs.

DePhillips came on with a runner on first and two outs in the eighth and picked him off before striking out the side in the ninth.

Woolford had an RBI groundout in the sixth. Shenandoah's first run came on a double steal with Henry Delavergne stealing home as Grant Thompson stole second.

Hunter Campbell (2-4) took the loss for Lynchburg. He went the distance and gave up three runs (two earned) on just five hits while striking out six.

Shenandoah makes a quick trip up I-81 Sunday for a 2 p.m. non-league contest at PSU-Harrisburg.
