RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team opened its 2019 season in dominating fashion Friday evening, taking out N.C. Wesleyan 5-1 in the opening game of the Meredith College Classic.

Abby Alexa had a pair of goals and two assists to lead the Hornets (1-0) to the win over NCWC (0-1).
 
IN BRIEF
Alexa had a hand in the first three goals of the game, coming in the opening 7:43 as she scored the first two and the assisted sophomore Maiya Pencile.
 
Pencile had set up Alexa's second goal.
 
In the second half, freshman Kristen Fisher scored in the 67th minute before senior Emily Yergin closed out the day's scoring with a goal off of Alexa's second assist.
 
Yergin's goal is her 49th career tally. She is now two away from tying Jen Johnson '95 and Brandy Wheeler '95 for the all-time lead at SU.

MATCH NOTES
Yergin now has 49 career goals and 120 career points. She is two goals and 12 points from tying for the all-time lead in both categories.
 
The win over NC Wesleyan is the program's fifth since 2000 and comes in the first meeting between the two programs since 2011 when both schools were members of the USA South.
 
The Hornets outshot the Bishops 28-4 and took two of the three corner kicks in the contest.
