Volleyball Wins in Five

Down Alvernia 24-26, 25-14, 25-19, 22-25, 15-11

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University volleyball team earned its fourth win of the season Saturday with a 3-2 non-league home victory over Alvernia.
 
Shenandoah (4-10) won sets two and three, 25-14 and 25-19, before Alvernia (1-8) forced a fifth game with a 25-22 triumph in the fourth.
 
SU clinched the win with a 15-11 victory in the fifth.
 
The Golden Wolves had opened the match with a 26-24 win in the opening set.
 

IN BRIEF

Shenandoah quickly seized control of the fifth, scoring the four of the initial five points of the set and eventually taking an 8-3 lead.
 
Alvernia answered with a four-point run to cut it to 8-7 before an attack error gave the serve back to the hosts.
 
Two more attack errors extended the SU lead to 11-7 and Alvernia was able to get no closer than three points the rest of the way.
 
Senior Emily Cheatwood had a match-high 19 kills with freshman Kieran Turner adding 16.
 
Megan Hillyard had 48 of the team's 51 assists.
 
Defensively, Niki Balestri had 21 digs and Kate Poppo 16.
