Women's Soccer Wins in Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team earned its third win of the season with a 4-1 non-league victory at Rutgers-Camden Sunday afternoon.
 
The Hornets (3-2) scored the only three goals of the first half on its way to the victory over the Scarlet Raptors (0-3).

IN BRIEF

Freshman Sara Sonnak put SU on top to stay with an unassisted goal just 7:03 into the contest.
 
Shenandoah scored two goals in the final five minutes of the first half to take the commanding lead.
 
Freshman Kristen Fisher set up both goals, finding Brittany Bessette at 40:21 and Maiya Pencile at 44:16.
 
The two teams traded single goals in the second with Taylor Morris closing the book on the day's scoring with a goal at 84:25. Pencile had the assist on that tally.
 
Anna Jacobson had five saves to earn the win in goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SU 08' | Freshman Sara Sonnak saw success from the left side of the field with a long shot that sailed over the keeper's head into the top-right corner.

SU 41' | After a Kristen Fisher cross from the left side, Brittany Bessette scored her first goal from the top of the box high over the keeper's head. 

SU 45' | Fisher picked up her second assist of the day with a cross into the box, Maiya Pencile scored off the header. 

RU-C 58' | Sarah ZuZulock bent a shot in from the left side.

SU 85' | Taylor Morris scores off of a Pencile assist.

QUOTABLE

"We had a great defensive effort tonight," head coach Liz Pike said. "Angelina Martirano and Casey Morren really played well and helped us secure a team victory."

MATCH NOTES

  • The Hornets had 10 shots on goal
  • Shenandoah wasn't awarded any corner-kicks.
  • Pencile now has a team-high 11 points on the year through five games.
