Generals Defeat Men's Basketball

Shenandoah puts up 50 points in second half

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team fell short in their comeback attempt 87-77 at Washington & Lee in an ODAC contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (5-11, 2-5 ODAC) trailed the Generals (12-4, 4-3) by as many as 24 points in the first half and battled back, putting up 50 points in the second half to cut the deficit to just 10 at the end of the game.

IN BRIEF

SU opened up the game cold, shooting 9-of-29 for 31.03 percent from the field and 1-of-9 for 11.11 percent beyond the arc.

Adding the offensive woes to being beat on the boards 30-14 and 6 turnovers, Shenandoah gave W&L some easy buckets and in a 43-27 hole going into halftime.

The Generals held all of the Hornets in single-digit scoring for the first half.

The teams resilience and Coach Walsh's halftime speech breathed life into the offense for the second.

SU held W&L scoreless for the first five possessions forcing bad shots and a pair of turnovers. The Hornets gained some traction as the 3-ball started to fall and the Hornet defense forced a few turnovers early on in the second half.

The Hornets went on a 31-17 run over a ten minute span toward the end of the second half getting within eight points of the host off a Chris Oates  3-pointer with 44 seconds to go in the game.

QUOTES FROM COACH

"I am proud of the continued and collective effort from this group. The guys have continued to fight when games have appeared to get away from us over the past couple of seasons and I know that is a testament to their character. There is no way we would hae been able to score 50 points in the second half if we would have folded. It was nice to Alan, Jalen and Zach got back in the groove offensively but we need to get better at the consistency aspect of the game because down the stretch was a different team, things were clicking but we ran out of time to dig ourselves out of the hole we put ourselves in at the beginning."
-Head Coach Adam Walsh
