Women's Basketball Earns First Win at Guilford in Program History

Shenandoah shot 92.3% from the line to secure an ODAC win

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team defeated ODAC member Guilford College 46-42 in a league contest on Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah's sophomore class sparked the Hornets (9-6, 6-3 ODAC)  in the first half, scoring 17 of the team's 19 points to lay the foundation to defeat the Quakers (8-6, 4-5) in what proved to be a back-and-forth game with nine lead changes and three ties.

THE RUNDOWN

1st Quarter
The Quakers got on the board first with a three-pointer from Calyn Davis but Sierra St. Cyr, the game's leading scorer, answered shortly after. The two teams traded the lead twice but SU outscored GC 10-7 after one quarter.
2nd Quarter
Guilford scored four of the first five baskets of the second quarter, giving Guilford a four point advantage. Coach Smeltzer-Kraft then turned to a sophomore heavy line-up for an offensive spark. Kelsey Jones, Olivia Weinel, Ragan Johnson and St. Cyr were led by senior point guard Sarah Donley to take back momentum and ended the second half on a 7-2 stretch in the final five minutes of the half.
3rd Quarter
Early in the third the lead changed hands four times before Shenandoah went on a nine point run, leading by as many as nine to turn around and see the Quakers dig themselves out of the hole, scoring six of their own to close out the third.
4th Quarter
SU had a three point cushion going into the final 10 minutes, the hosts insured that the Hornets couldn't let up in the fourth. GC chipped away at the Shenandoah lead, trading successful offensive possessions throughout the quarter coming down to the final seconds.

At the 1:32 mark the Quakers used the bonus to their benefit, cutting the SU lead to three, forced a Shenandoah turnover on the following possession, and then capitalized on another free-throw. St. Cyr stopped the bleeding with a Hornet layup with 1:00 on the clock.

Guilford was able to score in just 14 seconds. Shenandoah called a quick timeout to advance the ball up the sideline but turned the ball over on the inbound play. The Hornets avoided paying for what could have been a costly mistake with a Guilford travel to get the ball back.

Shenandoah did an excellent job getting the ball into Jordan Sondrol's hands as Guilford approached the foul bonus, Sondrol went 4-for-4 in the last 20 seconds securing a Hornet victory.
