Women's Basketball Takes Down Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team took down the University of Mary Washington 44-32 in a defense-heavy non-conference game on Wednesday night.

The Hornets (10-6) held the Eagles to single-digit scoring in the final three quarters to beat UMW (13-5) for the second time in program history.

Shenandoah's first win over Mary Washington came on November 24, 2009 in Winchester.

THE RUNDOWN

1st Quarter
SU struggled to get the ball in the hoop, shooting 25% (3-of-12) and were outscored 11-6.
2nd Quarter
The Hornets flipped the script in the second quarter, the Sondrol sisters split 10 points and McKenzie Mathis bucket gave SU a small 18-17 advantage at halftime. The Shenandoah defense held UMW to just six in the quarter giving them some defensive momentum for the rest of the game. 
3rd Quarter
Guard Sierra St. Cyr had a perfect third quarter shooting 3-for-3 with a free throw, three rebounds and seven points. Shenandoah forced a lot of difficult shots, holding UMW at six points for a consecutive quarter and out-rebounded the Eagles 13-8 to extend the lead 31-25. 
4th Quarter
Olivia Weinel recorded five points in the quarter helping the Hornets extend their lead to 12 points to secure the second-ever victory and first on the road at UMW.

STATS OF THE DAY 

  • Jordan Sondrol and Sierra St. Cyr led the team in scoring with 10 points each 
  • Sarah Sondrol added seven and Ragan Johnson six points. 
  • Seven women recorded points for SU 
  • Johnson controlled the boards with a game-high six rebounds with two blocked shots and a steal on her stat line.
