Women's Basketball Completes Sweep at Roanoke

SALEM, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team extended their winning streak to three, all on the road, in a 69-56 win over ODAC member Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon.

The Maroons (12-6, 7-4 ODAC) fell victim to the Hornets' (11-6, 7-3)  hot hand in the Cregger Center this afternoon.

THE RUNDOWN

1st Quarter

SU came right out of the locker room shooting lights out, starting the game on a 10-2 run only giving up two free throws in the first five minutes of play.

Roanoke found a bit of momentum at the 4:34 mark, with a 7-0 run starting with back-to-back layups and a three-pointer from Sayre Brandstatter.

The Hornets closed out the first quarter with the 16-15 advantage shooting 6-of-11 for 54.44 percent.

2nd Quarter

The visitors extended the lead in the second stanza, making eight field goals including five three-point jumpers. Senior Jordan Sondrol found her rhythm with three baskets behind the arc with classmate Sarah Donley and Sierra St. Cyr both adding one.

Donley's bucket at the 1:14 mark gave SU a 10 point lead and a decent cushion heading into halftime.

3rd Quarter

The hot hand cooled off a little bit in the third, making half of the 10 attempted field goals and only one three-pointer. The Hornets led by as many as 16 points when Olivia Weinel found the basket with 1:49 to go in the quarter.

4th Quarter

With a 14 point advantage to start the final stanza, Roanoke's defense held the Hornets to just 13 points but SU saw the largest lead of the day, 19 points, after a St. Cyr pull-up jumper with five minutes to play. The visitors coasted to victory, completing a season sweep over the Maroons.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"This was a great road win for us to complete the season sweep here. Today's game was a total group effort on both ends of the floor, hitting some 3's is a great way to extend the defense and we were able to do that today." -Head Coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft

  • Jordan Sondrol had an incredible offensive performance, putting up 25 points, with five three-pointers and four assists
  • Sierra St. Cyr posted a double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds adding two blocked shots and four steals
