WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Washington & Lee jumped out to a big lead Wednesday evening in a 65-57 ODAC women's basketball victory over Shenandoah University.
Washington & Lee (13-6, 10-2 ODAC) completed the season sweep over the Hornets (11-7, 7-4) by scoring 10 of the first 14 points of the contest.
IN BRIEF
In a rematch of the 2019 ODAC championship game won by SU, the Generals reeled off a 21-4 run in a span of 7:04 in the first quarter to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 21-6 lead.
The run was enough to give W&L a lead it would not relinquish.
Shenandoah, which found itself down by 15 points at halftime and 21 midway through the third, did manage to claw back into the contest.
Trailing 55-34 following two Erin Hughes free throws with 4:02 remaining in the third, SU scored 17 of the game's next 19 points to make it 57-51 following an Olivia Weinel jumper with 7:44 remaining.
A Jordan Sondrol block, one of three on the evening for the program's all-time leader, gave the Hornets the ball back with a chance to cut the deficit to four.
Unfortunately for the Wilkins Center faithful, SU missed a transition layup following the Sondrol block and Washington & Lee gathered in the rebound to kickstart an 8-0 run to clinch the contest.
The Hornets scored the final six points of the game on Weinel and Ragan Johnson jumpers and a Diandra Mundle layup.
