WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Eastern Mennonite University earned its first ODAC win of the 2019-20 men's basketball season with an 80-79 victory over Shenandoah University Wednesday evening.
The Royals (3-10, 1-3 ODAC) held a 17-point lead in the first half, but needed a waning moments jumper from DJ Hill to secure the victory over Shenandoah (5-8, 2-2).
IN DEPTH
In a game that featured seven ties and nine lead changes, Hill gave EMU the lead for good with his 10-foot jumper with 6.8 seconds remaining.
Three time-outs followed, two from Eastern Mennonite and one from Shenandoah, before the Hornets were able to run their potential game-winning play.
Coming out of their own time-out with 2.6 seconds left, SU attempted an inbounds pass to senior Christopher Chaney, but Chaney was denied the ball on a scrum in front of the basket and EMU escaped with the win.
Hill's final bucket, one of 13 he had on the evening, ruined a Hornets comeback that saw SU fall behind by 17 points, 37-20, with 4:29 remaining in the first half.
Shenandoah ended the half on a 15-4 run, cutting the deficit to six points, 41-35, at the break.
An 11-6 SU spurt to start the second put the hosts down just one, 47-46, by the 16:16 mark.
Eastern Mennonite extended its lead back out to eight before another Shenandoah run, this one 13-5, tied it at 61-all following a pair of Alex Horvath free throws with 11:03 left.
The two teams were separated by no more than four points the rest of the way.
