WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Hampden-Sydney led wire-to-wire, but had to hold on in a 61-56 ODAC men's basketball victory over Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon at the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.
Â
H-SC (13-7, 8-3 ODAC) scored the initial eight points of the game and held a 15-point lead in the second half, but saw Shenandoah (6-14, 3-8) take a game-tying shot in the waning moments of the contest.
IN BRIEF
Trailing 59-56 after the Tigers missed a jumper with 23 seconds remaining, the Hornets advanced to the frontcourt before calling a timeout to set up the potential game-tying shot.
Â
The play worked to perfection as senior
Chris Oates' got a clean look from just outside the 3-point arc, but his shot glanced off the back rim and out-of-bounds to H-SC.
Â
The Tigers then hit a pair from the line to clinch the victory.
Â
Oates, on the strength of four 3-pointers, led the hosts in scoring with 14 points with
Harry Wall adding 13.
Â
Hampden-Sydney had four of its five starters score in double-figures with Jack Wyatt leading the way with 20.
Â
H-SC held a 47-45 edge on the glass but Shenandoah scored seven of the game's 11 second-chance points.
