BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball ran its winning streak to four games Wednesday night thanks to an 83-70 ODAC victory at Bridgewater.
Â
The Hornets (15-7, 11-4 ODAC) outscored the Eagles (13-9, 12-3) by 11 points in the opening stanza to a take a lead they would not relinquish.
IN BRIEF
Shenandoah shot an even 50 percent (7-of-14) from the field in opening up that first period lead while holding BC to just 18 percent (4-of-18) shooting.
Â
The Hornets, who went to the line 43 times in the contest, were 7-of-8 from the charity stripe in the first to help build the lead.
Â
Coach
Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club kept up its defensive in the second, preventing the Eagles from making a single 3-pointer in the opening half, while extending its lead by an additional two points.
Â
A 25-point third effectively sealed it for the visitors and allowed the Hornets to split the season series with its I-81 rival.
Â
The win keeps Shenandoah's quest for the No. 1 seed at the upcoming ODAC Tournament alive as the Hornets trail Washington & Lee, Emory & Henry and Bridgewater by no more than 1.5 games with three games remaining in the regular season.
Â
The top six teams in the league receive a first-round bye in the 10-team ODAC Tournament. SU can clinch one of those spots with a win Saturday in its home finale versus Guilford.
Â
Senior
Jordan Sondrol led the victors with 21 points with
Ragan Johnson adding 16 and
Olivia Weinel 10.
Â
Johnson was 12-of-15 from the line and also had a team-high seven rebounds.
QUOTABLE
"Our kids showed tremendous composure in all regards tonight," head coach
Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said. "I am glad we got a second shot at Bridgewater and made the most of it."
